Preparations are reportedly underway to transfer former FTX CEO Sam "SBF" Bankman-Fried from New York to a federal facility in California near his parents' residence. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal on May 22, it is anticipated that Bankman-Fried will be relocated to the Mendota Federal Correctional Facility, though his legal team has requested that he remain in the New York vicinity while he pursues an appeal. In March, a federal judge sentenced SBF to 25 years in prison following his conviction on seven felony counts.
Bankman-Fried has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn since August 2023, when his bail was revoked before the trial commenced. Following the sentencing, he expressed a desire to stay in a Brooklyn facility to maintain easy access to his legal representation. Should he be transferred to FCI Mendota, Bankman-Fried would reside approximately 200 kilometers from his parents' home in California. His confinement began after extradition and indictment from the Bahamas in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The facility currently accommodates 931 inmates, as per the Federal Bureau of Prisons website.
Notably, SBF is the first individual to face incarceration for defrauding clients following the collapse of FTX and Alameda Research. His associates, including Ryan Salam, Caroline Ellison, Gary Wang, and Nishad Singh, have all pleaded guilty and await sentencing, with Salam scheduled for May 28. Despite speculation, it is unlikely that Bankman-Fried will share a facility with former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao. Following Zhao's guilty plea, the judge sentenced him to four months in prison, to be served in Washington or Oregon. No reporting date has been finalized at the time of writing.
