The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on cryptocurrency wallets allegedly associated with individuals and entities involved in the production of fentanyl.
On October 3, the U.S. Department of Justice announced indictments against several Chinese chemical manufacturers and their employees for allegedly employing cryptocurrency transactions in a scheme to distribute illegal fentanyl precursors. U.S. authorities claim that these companies used cryptocurrency transactions to conceal their identities and the movement of funds. They have identified at least three individuals who held crypto wallets for receiving payments.
OFAC has specifically linked Bitcoin wallets, as well as those associated with Ethereum, USDC, Tether, and Tron (TRX), to Chinese nationals. Valerian Labs is included in its list of Specially Designated Nationals, alongside companies like Hanhong Pharmaceutical Technology and Hebei Crovell Biotech.
Deputy Finance Minister Wally Adeyemo stated that this enforcement operation aims to disrupt illegal drug networks and mentioned that they have identified and frozen more than a dozen virtual currency wallets connected to these actors. These blocked wallets received millions of dollars through hundreds of deposits, underscoring the scale of the targeted actions.
There has been growing concern among lawmakers about the circulation of fentanyl in the United States, a drug that was estimated to have caused over 67,000 deaths in 2021. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, a vocal critic of cryptocurrencies, previously highlighted potential connections between cryptocurrency payments and drug trafficking during a hearing in May.
Interestingly, the first week of October marks the tenth year since the imprisonment of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the online marketplace Silk Road. Although Silk Road has faced criticism for enabling drug trafficking through cryptocurrency payments, Ulbricht still has supporters within the cryptocurrency community.
