Asset manager VanEck has submitted a revised application for a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 27, according to the SEC's database. This updated filing draws attention to the fact that Seed Capital investors acquired the Seed Creation Basket in October, which consists of 50,000 shares of the proposed ETF. It also emphasizes that Bitcoin's prices are determined based on the MarketVector Bitcoin Benchmark Index, which serves as a reference price for the cryptocurrency.
Notably, the revised filing implies that the fund will be seeded with Bitcoin itself, distinguishing it from other spot Bitcoin ETF proposals that are typically seeded with cash. A spot Bitcoin ETF is designed to invest directly in Bitcoin, as opposed to existing ETFs that invest in Bitcoin futures. This version of the product is expected to garner substantial interest from investors seeking Bitcoin exposure through traditional asset managers.
VanEck's latest filing aligns with a broader trend among asset managers who are updating their applications for spot Bitcoin ETFs. In September, Bitwise Asset Management similarly submitted an amended application in response to the SEC's concerns about the product.
Furthermore, ARK Invest and 21Shares recently revised their joint filing to provide additional information about their proposed spot Bitcoin ETF, including details about asset custody and valuation practices. These revisions may indicate progress in discussions between asset managers and regulators, addressing issues and concerns raised by the SEC. It's a promising sign that the industry is advancing toward the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States.
While the U.S. SEC has delayed its decision on multiple U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF proposals, including those from BlackRock, Invesco, Bitwise, VanEck, and Valkyrie, many market participants and analysts believe that a decision may be reached in the coming weeks. This suggests growing interest and regulatory engagement in the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency-based investment products.
