The White House plans to brief US senators on artificial intelligence (AI) as discussions on regulating the technology continue. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer announced in a letter on July 9 that the Senate would hold a classified briefing on AI with the Defense Department and the intelligence community. The briefing aims to shed light on how the US government is currently utilizing and investing in AI for national security purposes and to understand the AI activities of adversaries. The meeting is scheduled to take place on July 11 at the Sensitive Quarantined Information Facility in Washington, DC.
Schumer emphasized the importance of learning from experts in the field and translating their insights into legal action. He mentioned that the Senate will organize a series of "AI Insight Forums" and meetings with top AI experts to further explore the topic. The first briefing will be led by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, Deputy Secretary of Defense Catherine Hicks, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Director Trey Whitworth, and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar.
Schumer expressed his intention to build upon a framework he proposed called the "safety innovation framework" for AI. The framework aims to guide the Senate in advancing American leadership in AI while ensuring its potential is realized and society is protected from potential risks. Schumer has Previously advocated for comprehensive legislation on AI and participated in a bipartisan bill proposal focused on transparency and innovation in AI development. He has also called for the establishment of a new global competition analysis office to enable the government to stay informed ab out global AI trends.
