The Worldcoin project, known for its iris-scanning technology, has reached a significant milestone as its mobile World App surpasses 4 million downloads, according to a blog post by the project team on November 1. If CoinGecko verifies this number, World App could potentially become the sixth most downloaded software wallet on CoinGecko's list.
The project development team, known as "Tools for Humanity," also reported having more than 1 million monthly users, a figure that has doubled in the past six months. Worldcoin's core concept involves users verifying their humanity through iris scanning, receiving a "world ID" in return, which helps establish their non-bot status. Each verified user is rewarded with 25 WLD tokens, approximately valued at $46.50 at the time of writing.
Worldcoin has garnered popularity in developing markets like Argentina, where some participants see the sign-up and token sale process as a way to earn quick extra income. Nevertheless, the project has faced criticism for potential privacy infringements and concerns over centralization, which could lead to public exposure of user data.
To claim their WLD tokens, users must download the World App to create an account. The recent announcement indicates that the app has been downloaded over 4 million times, positioning it above the Solana Phantom wallet on CoinGecko's list of popular wallets but below Bitcoin.com's Bitcoin wallet.
A notable aspect is that some users appear to continue using the app after downloading it. The World App now boasts 1 million monthly active users, along with 500,000 weekly active users and 100,000 daily active users, which is twice the number of monthly active users reported six months ago. However, despite these achievements, the project has faced criticism from privacy advocates. In early October, a Kenyan parliamentary committee ordered Worldcoin to halt its operations due to privacy concerns. The project complied with the order while maintaining its commitment to complying with all privacy laws in the country.
