Twitter's subscription service, known as "X," has introduced an option for users subscribed to the "Blue" service to hide the checkmark badge on their profiles. This change comes as part of ongoing adjustments made by owner Elon Musk and newly appointed X CEO Linda Yaccarino to the subscription service's features. Previously, the verification system on Twitter involved issuing checkmarks to high-profile users to confirm their identities and mitigate impersonation risks, especially for celebrities, politicians, and journalists.
After Elon Musk took over X and Twitter, he reconfigured the verification system, introducing changes to the way checkmarks are obtained. With the current X "Blue" subscription service, users can acquire a checkmark badge by subscribing to the service and associating a phone number with their account. A recent update now provides users the option to hide the subscription badge on their profiles. The reasons behind this new feature remain unclear, as X tends to respond to queries with humor rather than detailed explanations. However, X's accompanying Help page mentions that the change might not completely eliminate the appearance of checkmarks in certain contexts.
Despite these adjustments, some associations with controversial subjects persist. A preprint study published by Princeton University researchers in June 2023 indicated that accounts receiving Blue subscriptions were overrepresented among those associated with conservative political content, positive sentiments towards Elon Musk, and the promotion of cryptocurrency. Unfortunately, for well-intentioned subscribers, the checkmark symbol has garnered negative connotations due to its connection with cryptocurrency scams, extremist political views, and the controversial figure of Elon Musk within the global tech landscape.
Elon Musk's willingness to make changes and his acknowledgment of potential mistakes reflect his proactive approach to refining the subscription service and addressing user concerns. The introduction of the option to hide the checkmark badge showcases X's commitment to providing users with more control over their profile presentation while navigating the complexities of social media engagement.
