Yuga Labs, the company responsible for the widely known non-fungible token (NFT) project Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), has undergone a significant restructuring in response to ongoing challenges in the NFT industry. CEO Daniel Alegre took to Twitter on October 17 to announce the completion of the restructuring efforts initiated earlier in the month. Alegre explained that the company is shifting its focus and unveiling a new team configuration.
The primary objective of this restructuring is to prioritize the development of Otherside, a gamified and interoperable Metaverse project introduced by Yuga Labs in March 2022. Alegre emphasized that building an immersive metaverse platform is both a technical and creative challenge. The Metropolis concept will be a central element of Otherside. Alegre expressed his enthusiasm for Otherside, characterizing it as a significant investment for Yuga Labs.
The reorganization was initially disclosed by Yuga Labs co-founder Greg Solano on October 6. Solano stated that Yuga Labs needed to make changes to secure its long-term success. Although he did not specify how many employees would be affected, Solano assured that Yuga Labs would maintain a team of over 120 employees with a strong focus on specific priorities.
Alegre acknowledged that the restructuring presented challenges, not only to the industry but also to the global economy. He emphasized the company's commitment to ensuring that departing employees are treated with respect and gratitude. Yuga Labs is providing a transition package that includes generous severance packages, comprehensive budget Regulation Act coverage, and support in finding new job opportunities for affected team members.
In parallel with these developments, a U.S. appeals court cast doubt on the dismissal of a trademark lawsuit initiated by Yuga Labs against artist Ryder Ripps, who had created a copy of Yuga's BAYC NFT. Additionally, in August 2023. a group of BAYC investors filed a class-action lawsuit against Yuga Labs and the fine art auction house Sotheby's. They accused the auction house of aiding Yuga Labs in deceptively promoting NFT collections.
