Renowned blockchain investigator ZachXBT has been appointed as one of the four custodians overseeing a multi-signature wallet containing funds from users affected by the GameFi protocol Munchables' hack.
Munchables developers announced on April 1 that ZachXBT would join Manifold Trading, Selini Capital, and Munchables as the fourth signer of the multi-signature wallet to facilitate the safe return of user funds. Additionally, they mentioned that Nethermind would review all updated contracts before the platform resumes operations.
In response to his nomination, ZachXBT stated that he would temporarily join the multi-signature as a signee for the initial phase but expressed a desire not to be involved in the long term. He hinted at increased game rewards for returned depositors as a means of additional compensation and teased plans for relaunching NFT migration and other features.
Furthermore, the developers outlined their gratitude towards custodians and users who aided in stopping the attack, promising them ETH and future MUNCH donations as tokens of appreciation for their efforts in asset recovery. They concluded their statement with a quote from ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, emphasizing the importance of seizing the opportunities presented in life.
The incident occurred on March 26, when Munchables, operating on the Ethereum layer 2 network Blast, allegedly enlisted a North Korean developer under the pseudonym "Werewolves0493," who subsequently orchestrated a hack resulting in the theft of $63 million. A subsequent investigation led by ZachXBT revealed that the attackers had impersonated four different developers within the Munchables team and shared private keys to access users' funds illicitly.
