French cryptocurrency startup Zama has secured $73 million in Series A funding, advancing its ambitious agenda to compute encrypted data without the need for decryption. CEO Rand Hindi revealed the financing round on March 7, which was led by prominent industry investors Multicoin Capital and Protocol Labs. The primary objective of this funding is to propel the adoption of Zama's fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) technology.
Zama's FHE technology, hailed by Hindi as the "holy grail of cryptography," seeks to establish data privacy as a fundamental feature of the internet while facilitating information processing, particularly in cloud computing operations. According to Pascal Paillier, Zama's chief technology officer, FHE operates akin to a "magic box" where users can input a secret message, lock the box, and allow others to perform mathematical operations on it without accessing the original message. This enables secure mathematical calculations while preserving the confidentiality of the underlying data.
Since its establishment in 2020, Zama has attracted significant clients, including Shiba Inu, which is leveraging Zama's technology to construct its entire network state. SHIB recently implemented new FHE-enabled privacy infrastructure, aiming to enhance on-chain privacy. Paillier emphasized Zama's goal of simplifying FHE usage and enhancing its efficiency for developers, ultimately enabling enterprises to leverage cloud computing and related technologies without compromising data privacy.
Zama's approach involves developing user-friendly tools, libraries, or platforms that seamlessly integrate FHE into everyday digital services, making it accessible to companies without requiring specialized expertise. The company's solution represents a significant breakthrough in the traditional trade-off between on-chain transparency and off-chain privacy. Developers can now deploy confidential smart contracts on encrypted data, preserving confidentiality and composability simultaneously.
The successful Series A funding round underscores the growing recognition and adoption of Zama's innovative FHE technology, positioning the company as a key player in the advancement of data privacy and security within the digital landscape.
