This article is about how did the crypto of Webaverse co-founder get hacked from their Trust wallet. This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of vigilance and security in the cryptocurrency space, highlighting the devastating consequences of falling victim to phishing scams. It also underscores the resilience and determination of the Webaverse team to overcome adversity and continue pursuing their vision.

How Did the Crypto of Webaverse Co-Founder Get Hacked from their Trust Wallet?

The co-founder of Webaverse shared a harrowing story of how their cryptocurrency was hacked from their Trust Wallet. Here's a summary of the key events:

1. Background on Webaverse: Webaverse is a decentralized metaverse platform that enables users to create and monetize virtual worlds, NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), and games.

2. Context of the Incident: On September 15th, 2023. the co-founder of Webaverse was attending the NFT.NYC conference in New York City. They were invited to speak about Webaverse and its vision at the conference. During this event, they were carrying a hardware wallet containing a significant amount of their project's funds, including their native token, WAVE.

3. Intention to Transfer Funds: The co-founder had intended to transfer some of these funds to team members, early supporters, and partners. They chose to perform these transactions in person, believing it would be more secure and trustworthy compared to online transfers.

4. The Phishing Attack: In the hotel lobby on the last day of the conference, while waiting for their Uber, the co-founder decided to initiate these transfers. They connected their hardware wallet to their laptop via a USB cable and opened the Trust Wallet app. At this point, they entered their PIN code to access their funds.

5. The Scam Message: Immediately after entering the PIN code, a pop-up message appeared on the laptop screen, claiming that the wallet had been compromised. The message urged the co-founder to transfer their funds to a provided address immediately to secure them. It included a QR code and an alphanumeric address.

6. Panic and Loss: Fearing for the security of their funds, the co-founder panicked and did not thoroughly verify the message's source or the provided address. They scanned the QR code with their phone and confirmed the transfer of all their funds to the address provided in the scam message.

7. Realization of the Scam: It took less than a minute for the co-founder to realize that they had fallen victim to a phishing scam. They recognized that the message was not from Trust Wallet but from a malicious Chrome extension called "Trust Wallet Helper," which they had installed a few days earlier. This extension posed as an official tool but was designed to trick users into sending their funds to the hacker's address.

8. Devastating Loss: Unfortunately, by the time the co-founder realized the scam, it was too late. The cryptocurrency transfer was irreversible, and the hacker had already moved the funds to another address. Attempts to contact Trust Wallet support and law enforcement were unsuccessful.

9. Apology and Commitment: The co-founder expressed deep regret and guilt for the incident, acknowledging the impact it had on their team, supporters, and community. They committed to taking full responsibility for the situation and to do everything in their power to recover from the hack and rebuild Webaverse.

10. Call for Community Support: The co-founder appealed to the Webaverse community, asking for continued support during this challenging time. They encouraged users, creators, and supporters to stay engaged with the project, spread the word about Webaverse, and help find new ways to fund the project's growth and development.

11. A Promise to Rebuild: Despite the devastating loss, the co-founder remained determined to rebuild Webaverse from scratch. They emphasized their belief in the project's vision and the potential to create a new era of digital creativity and ownership. They hoped to achieve this with the support and involvement of the community.

Bottom Line

In this article, we have discussed how did the crypto of Webaverse co-founder get hacked from their Trust wallet. This story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of security, verification, and caution in the cryptocurrency space, even in seemingly secure environments.
