What Does a Stock Mean?

Stocks are an investment that means you own a share in the company that issued the stock. Simply put, stocks are a way to build wealth.

This is how ordinary people invest in some of the most successful companies in the world. For companies, stocks are a way to raise money to fund growth, products, and other initiatives. When you buy the stock of a company, you're effectively buying an ownership share in that company.

How Do Stocks Work?

To raise funding, companies sell shares in their company. They then put that money to use for a variety of purposes: A business may utilize the funds received from a stock offering to finance new goods or product lines, invest in business expansion, pay down debt, or invest in growth.

An initial public offering, or IPO, is how businesses normally start issuing shares of their stock. When a company's stock is listed on the stock market, investors can buy and sell it. If you choose to purchase a stock, you will frequently do so From an investor who wants to sell the stock, not the company itself. Likewise, if you want to sell a stock, you'll sell it to another investor who wants to buy.

These trades are handled through a stock exchange, with a broker representing each investor.
