This article is about how to define Ordinals. Ordinals represent a convergence of blockchain technology and artistic expression, allowing users to embed content on the smallest units of Bitcoin and thereby contribute to the evolution of digital asset innovation within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

How to Define Ordinals?

Ordinals are emerging as a significant trend within the Bitcoin community, gaining widespread attention and activity. In April 2023. the daily record for Ordinal inscriptions was broken four times, indicating a surge in user engagement as they utilized this novel concept to create and share various forms of digital content.

Similar to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Ordinal Inscriptions are digital assets that are engraved onto satoshis, which are the smallest units of Bitcoin (BTC). This practice became possible due to the Taproot upgrade that was implemented on the Bitcoin network on November 14. 2021.

Bitcoin developers have been actively exploring ways to integrate NFTs into the Bitcoin blockchain for several years, starting as early as 2014 with initiatives like Counterparty's Rare Pepe NFT collection, followed by Stacks in 2017. The Inscription process involves encoding the content's data into the witness of a Bitcoin transaction. The concept of a witness was introduced with the Segregated Witness (SegWit) upgrade to the Bitcoin network in 2017.

Alex Miller, the CEO of Hiro, a company focused on layer-2 smart contract development on the Stacks platform, expressed admiration for Ordinals, referring to it as a genius concept. Miller highlighted that Ordinals are deeply aligned with the ethos of Bitcoin, as they combine various elements in a way that goes beyond the original expectations of the technology's creators.

To create Ordinals, users need to follow a series of steps. Initially, they need to download Bitcoin Core and synchronize their node with the blockchain. Once this synchronization is complete, users proceed to create an Ordinals wallet and transfer some satoshis to it. This lays the foundation for their involvement in the world of Ordinal Inscriptions, where they can engrave various forms of digital content onto satoshis using the technology made possible by the Taproot upgrade.

What is the Future of Ordinals?

The future of Ordinals holds the promise of more streamlined and user-friendly processes for inscribing content onto the Bitcoin network, along with the development of wallets that enable easy viewing of created Bitcoin NFTs.

In the ongoing pursuit of enhancing the Ordinals experience, various initiatives are emerging. One notable effort comes from Gamma, a Bitcoin NFT marketplace operating on the Stacks platform. Gamma has introduced a paid service that simplifies the creation of Ordinal Inscriptions, enabling users to engrave images and text onto satoshis seamlessly. This service aims to provide collectors with a convenient and efficient way to participate in the world of Ordinals.

Additionally, projects like Oridalsbot have entered the scene, offering a similar service for users interested in creating Ordinal Inscriptions. The creators of the Satoshibles NFT collection are behind this initiative, contributing to the expansion of options available to users seeking to engage with Ordinals.

The momentum behind Ordinals continues to grow, with established entities actively integrating this concept into their offerings. Hiro Systems, for instance, has recently announced its plans to incorporate support for Ordinals within its Hiro Wallet. This move is expected to provide users with enhanced accessibility and functionality for engaging with Bitcoin NFTs through the Ordinals framework.

Furthermore, the advancement of Ordinals is also evident on the wallet front. Xverse, a web wallet that operates on the Bitcoin network, has introduced support for Bitcoin NFTs, including Ordinal Inscriptions. This development aligns with the broader trend of wallets adapting to accommodate the evolving needs of users in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Bottom Line

In this article, we have discussed how to define Ordinals. The race is on to develop more seamless methods of inscribing on Bitcoin and wallets that make it possible to view the Bitcoin NFT once it is created.
