To freeze and unfreeze your credit, you must contact each of the three major credit bureaus. This article will discuss, "How To Freeze And Unfreeze Your Credit". Let's get started.

How To Freeze Your Credit

To freeze your credit, you must contact each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can place a credit freeze online, by phone, or by mail.

Online

To place a credit freeze online, you will need to create an account with each credit bureau. Once you have created an account, you can follow the instructions on the website to place a freeze.

By phone

To place a credit freeze by phone, you will need to call each credit bureau. The phone numbers for each credit bureau are as follows:

Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

Experian: 1-888-397-3742

TransUnion: 1-888-909-8872

When you call, you will need to provide your name, Social Security number, date of birth, and address. You will also need to provide a PIN that you will use to unfreeze your credit.

By mail

To place a credit freeze by mail, you will need to download and print a credit freeze form from each credit bureau's website. Once you have printed the form, you will need to mail it to the credit bureau along with a copy of your government-issued ID and a $10 processing fee.

Cost

Placing a credit freeze is free for you and your children. However, there may be a fee to lift a credit freeze. The fee for lifting a credit freeze varies by credit bureau.

Benefits

A credit freeze can help protect you from identity theft. When your credit is frozen, creditors cannot access your credit report without your permission. This makes it more difficult for someone to open a new account in your name.

Drawbacks

A credit freeze can make it more difficult for you to apply for new credit. If you need to apply for a new loan or credit card, you will need to lift your credit freeze temporarily. This can take a few days, so it is important to plan ahead.

How To Unfreeze Your Credit

To unfreeze your credit, you will need to contact each of the three major credit bureaus. You can unfreeze your credit online, by phone, or by mail.

Online

To unfreeze your credit online, you will need to log in to your account with each credit bureau. Once you have logged in, you can follow the instructions on the website to unfreeze your credit.

By phone

To unfreeze your credit by phone, you will need to call each credit bureau. The phone numbers for each credit bureau are as follows:

Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

Experian: 1-888-397-3742

TransUnion: 1-888-909-8872

When you call, you will need to provide your name, Social Security number, date of birth, and the PIN that you used to place the credit freeze.

By mail

To unfreeze your credit by mail, you will need to download and print a credit freeze form from each credit bureau's website. Once you have printed the form, you will need to mail it to the credit bureau along with a copy of your government-issued ID.

It is important to note that you should not unfreeze your credit unless you are applying for new credit. If you leave your credit unfrozen for an extended period of time, it could make you more vulnerable to identity theft.
