The Mt. Gox hack made Bitcoin famous, but what about the Bitfinex hack? In August 2016, Bitifinex announced devastating news. So, how was Bitfinex hacked? If you are a Bitcoin enthusiast, you must have knowledge on the Bitfinex hack.

How Was Bitfinex Hacked

Bitfinex made a terrible announcement in August of 2016. The largest theft of its kind to date occurred when hackers broke into the well-known Hong Kong exchange and stole bitcoin worth roughly $72 million at that time. was the biggest exchange trading in USD. The price of bitcoins dropped by roughly 20% when the news was made public, reaching a low of $480 before climbing again.

How Much Was Stolen From Bitfinex

They hacked 119,756 Bitcoins from Bitfinex. It's worth at that time was around $72M.

How Did Bitfinex Solve The Problem

Bitfinex distributed the losses among all of the company's customers and assets to lessen the damage. Customers noticed a 36% reduction overall. Each impacted consumer also received BFX tokens from Bitfinex, which they could exchange for stock in the business's company on the Finex exchange. Customers received one BFX for each lost dollar.

They stated that they were actively exploring for investment options to pay for those BFXs and pay their clients. They achieved astounding success. All BFX tokens had been exchanged for iFinex shares or redeemed for a full 100 cents on the dollar within eight months after the breach .

In addition to receiving shares of iFinex, traders also got RRT or Recovery Right Tokens. Any money recovered from the attack that is owed to RRT holders.

Even though the effects of such a significant attack were severe, Bitfinex was able to avoid bankruptcy and kept cooperating with foreign authorities to look into the event. According to a Bitfinex report from 2018, the US government was able to recover 27.66 BTC.

As promised, Bitfinex transferred the bitcoin to RRT holders after converting it to USD. Even though the amount is small—only 0.023% of the total stolen—still it's something.

Who Was The Bitfinex Hacker

Bitfinex urges anyone with information about the incident to come forward as it continues to work with law enforcement to find the remaining bitcoin that was stolen.

Two Israeli brothers were at least largely accountable for the 2016 breach, it was revealed in 2019. Then, in November 2020, 5,000 of the stolen Bitfinex bitcoin had been transferred to an additional address with an unidentified owner. Then, in April, the 2020 April whale alert twitter account revealed that $623M (or about 10% of the total) had also relocated.

Closing Thoughts

Even though the 2016 Bitfinex Exchange Hack was a fatal blow to the business, Bitfinex recovered. In contrast to Japan's Mt. Gox, the company was able to continue operating after suffering a hack in 2014 that resulted in the theft of 744,408 BTC, or roughly $350 million.

It's amazing what they were able to manage in just a few months, and their success was greatly influenced by their innovative approach to dealing with the aftermath. So, this is about “how was Bitfinex hacked?” There are many things from history to learn .
