The Biggest Whale in Bitcoin: People, Organizations, And Even a Country

Roughly 18.9 million bitcoins are already in circulation, and another 2 million need to be mined. When there is a limited supply, there is competition. A small group of individuals (called whales) have taken the lead in the bitcoin competition. In this article , we will talk about the biggest whales in bitcoin.

The Biggest Whale in Bitcoin

The biggest bitcoin holders in the market are listed below. Keep in mind that not every one of them is a person. They could be people, groups, or even a country.

Tim Draper

Having ancestry connected to the Silicon Valley business, Tim Draper knows a good opportunity when he sees one.

Early on, he saw bitcoin's potential. As a result, in 2014, when bitcoin was only worth $600, he bought 30,000 of them. Seven years later, he is now worth over $1.3 billion in bitcoin alone.

Draper is involved with a number of corporate giants, including Tesla, Baidu, and Skype.

Barry Silbert

Another early investor in bitcoin is Barry Silbert. It appears that a trend is emerging in this case.

In 2013 he founded DCG - Digital Currency Group, which consisted of five crypto-based companies. Their main function is investing in cryptocurrency start-ups, and throughout the years they have gathered bitcoin, Ethereum, and other currencies worth about $28 billion.

A year after starting DCG, Silbert purchased 48,000 bitcoins from the FBI. The government had taken the assets following an inquiry into financial criminality.

Tesla

The electric car company now owns over $2 billion worth of bitcoin. What's interesting is this information is listed on their public balance sheet. It seems Tesla wants the world to know its open relationship with bitcoin.

Brian Armstrong

Although Brian Armstrong doesn't have a specific number of bitcoin, he does hold a 19% share in Coinbase, a platform for cryptocurrency exchange. Therefore, he technically has access to a large amount of bitcoin.

He started Coinbase in 2012, and by 2018, he had earned a billion dollars. A few years later, the value of his company shares reached $15 billion.

Despite the current hack, Coinbase has been making a sizable profit. The exchange made more than $1 billion in the first three months of 2021. Brian has an almost $9 billion personal net worth.

Bulgaria

During the 2010s, Bitcoin was just for fun. Then, when large firms joined the fray and new billionaires appeared, things became serious. But what happens when a country joins in? You understand there is no going back.

Bulgaria became the first country in 2019 to possess more cryptocurrencies than gold. Bulgaria is a serious player in the cryptocurrency race with a holding of over 200,000 bitcoins.

If neighboring countries decide to play, the country will have leverage over them thanks to its level of holding. According to recent sources, Bulgaria presently owns bitcoins worth over $9 billion.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation

It is well known that the FBI occasionally holds significant quantities of bitcoin and other digital assets. Their bitcoin assets are nearly completely made up of seized properties because of the nature of their work.

They would then auction the seized bitcoins to interested buyers. Barry Silbert bought 48,000 BTC from the Bureau in 2013. If you count all the bitcoin that has ever passed through the FBI it might be in the millions. Their current reserve is reportedly 144,000 BTC.

Hopefully, reading this article, "The Biggest Whale in Bitcoin: People, Organizations,And Even a Country," can help you to understand it better.
