What apps does Meta own? The largest social networking site in the world, Facebook, is owned by Meta Inc. (META). The goal of Meta's strategy is to acquire potential competitors before they become too powerful. What apps does Meta currently own? Let's see.

What apps does Meta own?

The top 5 apps that Meta owns are shown below:

Instagram

Instagram is a social networking site for sharing pictures and videos that was launched in 2010. Users can upload, edit, and tag photographs and videos using the Instagram app. The business was independent until it was bought by Meta in 2012 for $1.0 billion. While Instagram was being keenly watched by venture capital companies and other investors, Meta purchased the photo-sharing platform.

When it acquired Instagram, Meta opted to build and grow the Instagram app independently from Meta's main Facebook platform; Instagram remains a separate platform to this day.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a messenger and calling service available to users throughout the world. The platform was launched in 2009 as a low-cost alternative to standard text messaging services. Throughout much of its history, WhatsApp has allowed users to send messages and make calls directly to other users for no cost, regardless of location. Users can also send photos, videos, and documents over the platform. Meta bought WhatsApp at a time when the smaller company boasted more than 400 million active monthly users, making it a fast-growing potential rival to the Facebook network platform.

When Meta purchased WhatsApp, it was an independent company that had recently been valued at $1.5 billion.

Messenger

Facebook Messenger is an instant messaging service that can do much more than just send texts. It was introduced by Meta in 2011. You don't need a Facebook account to use Messenger because the app and website are independent of Facebook, despite the fact that Facebook owns and operates the messaging service. Although the two are somewhat related when you have a Facebook account, having one is not necessary in order to use Messenger. Messenger is primarily a texting software that can be used for both private and group messaging, but it also contains a wide range of helpful features including typing indicators and video calling.

Onavo

Onavo, an Israeli company founded in 2010, does online analytics on other mobile apps to ascertain user behavior. Meta acquired Onavo in October 2013 for an undisclosed amount that some analysts estimated to be between $100 million and $200 million.

When the acquisition took place, Onavo was a separate business. Despite not being one of Meta's biggest purchases, Onavo's technology may have helped Meta make important early decisions on other businesses and apps to buy. In response to complaints, Meta had to remove Onavo from the iOS and Android app stores after it was periodically labeled as spyware.

Beluga

Beluga, a messaging software provider created in 2010, was purchased by Meta in 2012. In the midst of the startup's financing campaign, Meta acquired Beluga for an unknown price. Facebook purchased the technology from Beluga, which later evolved into the wildly popular Messenger platform used by the social media giant. In the process, Meta once more increased the range of its products and got rid of a possible rival.
