What are Layer 2 Blockchains? To help with scalability and speed, blockchains such as Ethereum utilize secondary blockchains built on top of them, which are called Layer 2. Let's take a closer look.

What are Layer 2 Blockchains?

A secondary framework or protocol that is added on top of an existing blockchain system is referred to as layer 2. The main goal of these protocols is to solve the transaction speed and scaling difficulties that are being faced by the major cryptocurrency networks.

What Is the Difference Between Layer 1 and Layer 2?

Blockchains like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the Binance Smart Chain are considered to be in Layer 1. Any layer 1 solution entails a fundamental change to the blockchain's basic structure. It might involve adding a new consensus process, increasing the block size, and other things as well.

On the other hand, Layer 2 solutions work off-chain. They enhance the way transactions and data are processed and organized instead of completely overhauling them. It is important to keep in mind that many of the transactions they transfer back to the blockchain are not as secure as the original layer 1 blockchain.

Layer-2 Solutions Benefits

-Increasing transactions per second (TPS) can ease network congestion on the mainnet and improve user experience.

- Transactions are consolidated into a single package before being recorded onto the mainnet, which lowers gas fees.

- Any updates to a Layer-2 solution do not alter the underlying blockchain, since Layer-2 is built on top of the blockchain, which helps ensure network security

- Enables the use of Layer-2 networks with application-specific designs that are created to optimize a certain feature.

Disadvantages of Layer-2 Solutions

- Could reduce liquidity in the main blockchain.

- Potential security and privacy vulnerabilities; users should do their own research before using Layer-2 solutions

- Could impede interconnectivity with other Ethereum-based applications (ie, using an L-2)

What are Layer 2 Blockchains? What Is the Difference Between Layer 1 and Layer 2? - Hopefully, this article can help you to get some knowledge.
