The Bitcoin community has been buzzing with excitement about Ordinal Inscriptions, but what is the latest trend captivating Crypto Twitter? What are Ordinals? I will tell you about it right now.
What Are Ordinals?
Ordinals have emerged as the latest sensation sweeping through the Bitcoin community. In April 2023, the daily record for Ordinal Inscriptions, which involve embedding digital assets onto satoshis (the smallest units of Bitcoin), was broken four times. Users flooded the network with a wide range of content, including images, video games, and other creative works.
Similar to NFTs (non-fungible tokens), Ordinal Inscriptions allow for the creation of unique digital assets that are engraved on satoshis. This novel concept became possible with the introduction of the Taproot upgrade, which was implemented on the Bitcoin network on November 14, 2021. The term "satoshi" is a nod to the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
What Is An Inscription?
Bitcoin developers have dedicated nearly a decade of effort to integrating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) into the leading blockchain. The journey began in 2014 with Counterparty, the creators of the Rare Pepe NFT collection, followed by the introduction of Stacks in 2017. The Inscription process, which is a key aspect of Ordinals, involves writing or inscribing the content data into the witness component of a Bitcoin transaction. The witness feature was introduced as part of the Segregated Witness (SegWit) upgrade to the Bitcoin network in 2017.
Alex Miller, CEO of Hiro, a developer for the Stacks layer-2 smart contract platform, expressed admiration for the concept of Ordinals, describing it as a brilliant solution. Miller stated that Ordinals aligns with the core ethos of Bitcoin by creatively combining different elements the s in a way that the original creators may not have anticipated.
To initiate the creation of Ordinals, users are required to download Bitcoin Core and synchronize their nodes with the blockchain. Once the synchronization is complete, the next step involves creating an Ordinals wallet and transferring some satoshis into that wallet.
Summary
What are ordinals? There is a competition underway to develop smoother processes for inscribing content on Bitcoin and to create wallets that enable easy viewing of Bitcoin NFTs once they are generated. The goal is to enhance the user experience and provide seamless functionality for interacting with Bitcoin -based NFTs. Various developers and projects are actively working on innovative solutions to streamline the inscription process and improve the accessibility and visibility of Bitcoin NFTs within dedicated wallets.
