Pixelmon has experienced everything in its brief lifetime so far, from becoming one of the most anticipated play-to-earn metaverse games to sinking into a seemingly endless pit of notoriety. Until the Pixelmon NFT team makes up with irate investors and restores its damaged reputation, it is undoubtedly the most contentious metaverse/NFT project in recent memory.

On what exactly triggered this disaster, the jury is yet out. Was it a matter of mishandled expectations and bad marketing, or is there something more sinister going on? With the help of this comprehensive guide, we hope to provide you with a complete picture of the situation so you can make an informed decision.

What is Pixelmon?

Pixelmon, which took inspiration from Pokémon, began as an ambitious project that promised a vast and complex metaverse. It was advertised as an open-world game where you could trade and train your own tiny monsters known as Pixelmons while exploring a virtual universe.

You would have to play the game by using your Pixelmons to battle other players' Pixelmons. If you constantly defeated your opponents in these battles, you would also receive rewards in ethereum (ETH) or Pixelmon NFT.

The goal of the project, according to the Pixelmon team's litepaper, was to create a "fun, open, and immersive world" that would bridge the gap between NFT and mainstream gaming.

The game would be available to everyone for free, albeit with certain optional pay-to-play features, in order to promote widespread adoption. The play-to-earn component of the game, on the other hand, promised to be advantageous to owners of Pixelmon NFT by granting them access to bigger prize pools, metaverse land, token airdrops, and other goodies.

The game made the claim that it would appeal to all different types of gamers, including but not limited to those who enjoy PvP, PvE, solo, and multiplayer games. At launch, Pixelmon promised customers quick multiplayer access on the PC while progressively adding support for other platforms like Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation.

First Generation of Pixelmon NFT

More than 150 different Pixelmon evolutions were available in the first generation of the Pixelmon NFT. Owners of Pixelmon genesis species were promised a variety of benefits, including exclusive access to airdrops of Pixelmon territory.

The excitement and the reveal of the Pixelmon NFT controversy

On February 7, 2022, a Dutch auction marked the start of the Pixelmon NFT collection's production.

By then, the initiative had gained a large social media following, with over 200,000 followers on Twitter alone. With every day that went by, the project's hype increased to unprecedented heights.

The excitement was so intense that the entire collection actually sold out in a matter of hours. The project's funding was increased by an astounding $70 million as a result of the launch sale, making it one of the largest NFT projects ever.

The cost of a Pixelmon NFT initially ranged up to 3 ETH (about $8000 at the time), but as the sale went on, it gradually decreased. The customers were generally pleased with the bonuses they were given, even if they were aware that the game's premiere was still a ways off (some of which we have already discussed above in the previous segment).

All is well thus far! But after the big revelation, all of the project's optimism was dashed, and accusations of fraud and harsh criticism as well as derision followed.

Excitation transforms into rage

The day of the big reveal, when the buyers realized that the Pixelmon NFT artwork was drastically different from the in-game renders that the development team had been sharing on social media, all hell broke out. They weren't just bad designs; they were such bad designs that the project as a whole became a laughingstock.

Customers were understandably irate, and they were unrelenting in their criticism of the developers. The collection's floor price, however, suffered a significant loss and fell to 0.3 ETH. And that amounts to just 10% of the retail value at the mint.

Scam, or another factor?

The Pixelmon team seems to have been really attempting to make things right ever since the scandal started. And based on that, it won't likely be proper to write off the project at this point as a hoax.

However, it doesn't speak highly of the team's professionalism that it took them significant community backlash and legal threats to make amends. They can only escape this mess by offering a Pixelmon NFT collection of the highest caliber that offers great value.

The development team must also stay alert and adhere to the project roadmap because the project will now require much greater inspection.
