We can obviously see that Puerto Rico's banking system's approach has shifted from negative to neutral. It occurred as a result of few banks improving their reserves, capitalization, and core funding. Others have increased their financial reserves in the midst of the economic downturn that Puerto Rico has been experiencing since 2004. What banks are in Puerto Rico?

The most important aspect of Puerto Rico's banking system is that it is part of the US banking system; however, there are a few tax exemptions. The Office of the Commissioner of Financial Institutions of Puerto Rico controls and regulates Puerto Rico's entire financial sector. The authority's mission is to ensure the financial sector's safety and security, as well as to ensure that banks and other financial institutions follow the territory's laws, rules, and regulations.

What Banks Are In Puerto Rico?

I will list the major banks in Puerto Rico below.

FirstBank

This bank was founded in 1948, roughly 69 years ago. It is a division of First Bancorp. The company's headquarters are in San Juan. FirstBank's total assets acquired in 2016 were US $12 billion, and the bank's net profit was US $93 million in the same year. It was previously known as First Federal Savings Bank, and in November 1994, it changed its name to what it is now. This bank focuses on retail banking, corporate banking, and commercial banking.

Banco Popular

This bank was established in 1893, nearly 124 years ago. Hato Rey is the company's headquarters. The total assets acquired by this bank in 2016 were US $38 billion, and the bank's net profit was US $358 million in the same year. As of December 31, 2016, it managed 171 branches and 635 ATMs in Puerto Rico. This bank's primary focus is on retail and commercial banking.

Oriental Financial Group

It was founded in 1964, approximately 53 years ago. The company's headquarters are in San Juan. The total assets acquired by this group in 2016 were US $6.5 billion, and the group's net profit was US $45 million in the same year. This organization provides a wide range of financial services throughout Puerto Rico. Oriental Bank, Oriental Insurance Inc., Caribbean Pension Consultants Inc. (CPC), and Oriental Financial Services Corp. are its four subsidiaries.

Closing Thoughts

The fact that Puerto Rico's banking system is part of the US banking system is the most important feature. The major banks in Puerto Rico are FirstBank, Banco Popular, and Oriental Financial Group. So, this is the answer for “What Banks Are In Puerto Rico?” Hope this helps.
