Block halving is the process of reducing the rate at which new units of cryptocurrency are generated. Today we will talk about what is a block halving event and tWhy is the halving important. Let’s find out by reading the article below.

What is a block halving event?

As part of the Bitcoin coin issuance, miners are rewarded with a certain number of Bitcoins for each block produced (approximately every 10 minutes). When Bitcoin first started, each block rewarded 50 bitcoins as a reward to miners. After every 210,000 blocks (approximately every 4 years), the block reward is halved and will continue to halve until the block reward becomes 0 every block (approximately by 2140). As of now, the block reward is 6.25 coins per block, which will be reduced to 3.125 coins per block after the halving.

Why is the halving important?

Halvings are central to the economic model of cryptocurrencies because they ensure that coins will be issued steadily with a predictable decay rate. This controlled monetary inflation rate is one of the key differences between cryptocurrencies and traditional fiat currencies, which inherently have an infinite supply.

I hope this article will help you to learn what is a block halving event and tWhy is the halving important. Bitcoin was designed to be a deflationary currency. As with gold, the premise is that over time, bitcoins will be issued in smaller quantities, thereby becoming more and more scarce over time. As Bitcoin becomes increasingly scarce, Bitcoin can be used as a hedge against inflation if the demand for Bitcoin increases over time, as the price of Bitcoin is bound to rise as guided by price equilibrium . On the other hand, fiat currencies (such as the U.S. dollar) inflate over time as the money supply increases, resulting in a decrease in purchasing power. This is known as currency devaluation due to inflation.
