What is Web3?

Web3 refers to the “latest generation” or “phase” of the internet that utilizes decentralized blockchains. Web3 also emphasizes machine learning, privacy, security and artificial intelligence to deliver a more personalized experience.

It is a term created by Ethereum's co-founder Gavin Wood in his article “Insights Into a Modern World'' and he described Web3 as the “Post Snowden Web”. He talked about the need for us to get a zero-trust interaction system that makes users of the web in charge of their data. Web3 takes decentralization as one of its fundamental core.

One of the many ways web3 will enhance the internet is through payments and identity. Web3 applications run on a blockchain or decentralized networks, known as Decentralized Apps (DApps).

Web3 and cryptocurrency go hand in hand as cryptocurrency plays a major role in web3. Different DApps use cryptocurrency as a financial incentive to encourage users to participate. And if you are thinking about getting involved in crypto, the first step in your journey is to acquire a Web3 wallet.

What is a Web3 wallet?

A Web3 wallet is simply a digital wallet that can be used to store digital assets. It stores a user's cryptocurrency, NFTs or other digital assets and allows the user to interact with decentralized applications (DApps) on various blockchains.

Web3 wallets are often non-custodial wallets, meaning that the wallet owner can store digital assets without needing a third party. Furthermore, the absence of a third party eliminates the need for KYC/AML, which preserves the privacy and anonymity of wallet owners.

A web3 wallet comes with its own private keys or seed phrase that is used to access the wallet, and the responsibility of securing the wallet lies with the owner of the wallet. Asides from the function of being able to store digital assets, a web3 wallet is used to send and receive digital assets and swap tokens.

In Web3, a user's identity is the web3 wallet that is used to interact with the Dapp. This enhances the traditional login authentication of email and password. Web3 wallets are anonymous, but users can decide to tie their identity to a wallet publicly.

What are the Types of Web3 Wallet?

Web3 wallets are categorized into Hot wallets or Cold wallets. Hot wallets can be further broken down into 2 different types: Web-based wallets which work as browser extensions and Mobile wallets which work in mobile phones.

- Hot Wallets are any crypto wallet that is connected to the internet.

- Cold Wallets are not connected to the internet and are hardware devices that store cryptocurrency offline are called cold wallets.

How to use a Web3 wallet

The best web3 wallets heavily focus on the user experience. User interfaces are easy to use and not complicated. You can set up your wallet and start trading assets within minutes, with little or no technical knowledge. There are many alternatives for Web3 wallets such as Metamask, Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet, Argent, Rainbow and so on. Here is “How to create a Web3 wallet”.

Step 1 - Download the Browser Extension or the Mobile Application

Step 2 - Create an Account

In this step, you will need to create a strong password and you will be shown a secret backup phrase. You will need to store this phrase in a secure place as it will allow you to restore your account and recover your funds.

Step 3 - Buying, Selling, or Swapping

Now that your wallet is set up you can buy, sell, or swap cryptos.

Bottom Line

The Web3 wallets are the most basic and essential thing you will need if you are trying to get into the crypto and NFT world. They are easy to create, user familiar and you are in full control of your own digital assets. So, whether you are a crypto addict or not, you should have a Web3 wallet and throughout this journey, you will get a thorough understanding of what is a Web3 wallet and how to use a Web3 wallet which would allow you to keep track of the crypto timeline .
