Altcoins are digital currencies that replace Bitcoin. The word altcoin is a combination of "alternative" and "coin" to form "altcoin". It actually refers to a group of cryptocurrencies and ultimately all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin. In this article we will talk about the topic "what is altcoin?", and "is it better to invest in Bitcoin or altcoin?".

What is Altcoin?

All coins other than Bitcoin (BTC) are altcoins. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that introduced blockchain technology to the world after the global financial crisis of 2008-2009.

BTC has revolutionized the financial world by establishing itself as the "gold standard" of cryptocurrencies. Its first-mover advantage makes it a stable balance among cryptocurrencies based on blockchain technology.

Alternative cryptocurrencies were created to ameliorate the technical and practical challenges of Bitcoin. So, is Ethereum an Altcoin?

The birth of altcoins was followed by the introduction of second and third-generation blockchain-based cryptocurrencies such as Litecoin (LTC) and Ether (ETH). Bitcoin is often quoted in dollars, yuan, euros, and other fiat currencies, while altcoins ( alternative cryptocurrencies) are usually valued in BTC.

3 types of altcoins

Altcoins can be categorized into Proof of Work (POW) and Proof of Stake (POS) altcoins (based on consensus mechanisms), stablecoins, and decentralized finance (DeFi) altcoins.

PoW and POS Altcoins

The Bitcoin network validates and processes transactions according to the PoW consensus method. Other PoW altcoins include LTC, Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and Zcash (ZEC). In contrast, validators (rather than miners) validate transactions in a POS model.

Ethereum is moving to a POS consensus mechanism due to the energy-intensive nature of the PoW method. Cosmos (ATOM) and Tron (TRX) are other examples of PoS altcoins.

Stablecoin Coins

Which value is pegged to fiat currency, such as the US dollar, are called stablecoins. A stablecoin is worth one unit of the fiat currency it is associated with.

For example, Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin whose value is pegged to USD. To hit the peg, stablecoin issuers typically hold cash or other assets equal to the number of coins in circulation in reserves. This way, if the coin fails or something goes wrong, the owner is compensated.

DeFi Altcoins

Blockchain-based DeFi stablecoin allows holders to lend or borrow cryptocurrencies in exchange for passive income. Compound (COMP), Synthetics (SNX), and Uniswap (UNI) are examples of DeFi altcoins to buy.

Is It Better to Invest in Bitcoin or Altcoins?

The question of which cryptocurrency is better is subjective and depends on an investor's financial situation, investment objectives, tolerance risk, and beliefs. Before you purchase any cryptocurrencies, you should discuss your investment options with a professional financial advisor.

Investing in cryptocurrencies and another ICOs is very risky and speculative. Before making any financial decisions, it is always advisable to get the advice of a professional because every person's circumstance is different.

Hopefully, you have a better understanding of the topic of "what is altcoin?", and "is it better to invest in Bitcoin or altcoin?".
