If you are familiar with Ethereum, you might have heard of ERC-1155. But what is ERC-1155 and does ERC-1155 support by MetaMask? We can find out in this article.

What is ERC-1155?

"ERC" stands for Ethereum Request for Comments. It is an EIP focused on Ethereum application standards, a category that includes tokens.

ERC-1155 solves this problem by combining two token standards. ERC-1155 is a token standard that enables efficient transfer of fungible and non-fungible tokens in a single transaction. Witek Radomski, Andrew Cooke, Philippe Castonguay, James Therien, Eric Binet, and Ronan Sandford proposed a new standard in June 2018 through EIP-1155.

How does ERC-1155 work?

The original motivation behind ERC-1155 was to solve the challenges faced by blockchain game developers and players. There are many examples of ERC-1155 being used outside of games. However, games are a good reference use case to understand how ERC-1155 works.

Using ERC-1155 tokens, multiple items can be stored in a single smart contract, and any number of items can be sent to one or more recipients in a single transaction. This means that if you want to give one friend a sword, another friend a shield, and two friends 100 gold, you can do it in one transaction.

Does ERC-1155 support by MetaMask?

MetaMask Mobile and Extension support ERC-1155 tokens, which means your wallet can receive and store assets that conform to the token's standard. Images associated with these assets can also be viewed on mobile devices, and we are working on extending this functionality to an Extension.

MetaMask does not yet support sending your ERC-1155 tokens, although we are working to implement this feature as soon as possible. In the meantime, we recommend that you use a platform that supports ERC-1155 transfers, such as OpenSea.

So I hope you will now know what is ERC-1155 and whether does ERC-1155 support by Metamask or not. Although ERC-1155 has been around for four years, it is still relatively underutilized compared to its ERC-20 and ERC-721 counterparts. ERC-1155 will continue to be used in Ethereum-based blockchain games. The advent of playing money-making games may speed up this process.
