ETH Hoodi is Ethereum's newly launched testnet, introduced on March 17. 2025. to facilitate testing for the upcoming Pectra upgrade. Hoodi aims to address challenges that were encountered with previous testnets, such as Holesky and Sepolia, and provides a stable environment for evaluating Ethereum's staking pools and node operators.

What Issues Did Previous Testnets Encounter?

Before the introduction of Hoodi, Ethereum developers faced significant issues with testing the Pectra upgrade on the Holesky and Sepolia testnets. Holesky suffered from validator inactivity and network instability, leading to its eventual phase-out by September 2025. Sepolia, on the other hand, encountered problems with validator exits, which hindered the thorough testing of the Pectra upgrade.

These challenges prompted the Ethereum development team to create Hoodi, a more stable and reliable testnet for evaluating the Pectra upgrade before its mainnet release.

What Is the Role of Hoodi in Ethereum's Upgrade Process?

Hoodi serves as the new testing ground for Ethereum's infrastructure and staking pools. It is designed to mirror Ethereum's mainnet closely, allowing developers to evaluate their systems in a controlled environment. Hoodi's purpose is to ensure that the Pectra upgrade works efficiently and without issues before it is deployed on the Ethereum mainnet.

The testnet will replace Holesky for testing staking and protocol development but will continue to use Sepolia for application and tooling development. Hoodi's role is crucial in ensuring that Ethereum's Pectra upgrade functions seamlessly upon its mainnet release.

What Features Does the Pectra Upgrade Introduce?

The Pectra upgrade introduces several key enhancements aimed at improving Ethereum's scalability and user experience. Notably, the upgrade will enable wallets to pay gas fees using cryptocurrencies other than ETH, which could simplify transactions for users. Additionally, Pectra will bring scaling improvements to Ethereum, such as increasing data availability and transaction throughput.

What is the Timeline for the Pectra Upgrade?

Hoodi's testnet activation took place on March 17. 2025. with the Pectra upgrade scheduled to activate on March 26. 2025. at epoch 2048. After successful testing on Hoodi, the Pectra upgrade is tentatively scheduled for deployment on Ethereum's mainnet around late April 2025. providing users with a more efficient and scalable Ethereum experience.

Conclusion: How Will Hoodi Impact Ethereum's Future?

Hoodi is an essential component of Ethereum's development process, providing a stable environment for testing the Pectra upgrade. As the testnet progresses, Ethereum's scalability and functionality will improve, paving the way for a more efficient platform. The Pectra upgrade, combined with successful testing on Hoodi, promises to enhance Ethereum's user experience and performance.
