What Is IIPFS? The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), a peer-to-peer (P2P) hypermedia protocol, was introduced in an effort to bring about a new internet revolution. You can read this article for more information.

What is IPFS?

Developed by Protocol Labs, the InterPlanetary Filing System (IPFS) is a P2P hypermedia protocol. It is a decentralized service that hosts material across a widely dispersed computer network.

The hosted material might come in many different forms and categories, such as databases, websites, media files, documents, and apps, among others. By inputting a "link," you can access any content that is available on the IPFS network. In In reality, accessing content works quite similarly to visiting a website by typing in its URL.

IPFS also deploys hundreds of thousands of nodes that donate their storage bandwidth for the network to store data, much like how blockchain networks use nodes to pull the processing power required to verify data.

Nodes are essentially individual computer systems that together make up the IPFS network, for those who are unaware. Therefore, IPFS can essentially perform all of the functions of centralized web2 platforms without the need for centralized data storage.

Why Do People Use IPFS?

The developer of IPFS, Protocol Labs, guarantees that the system will perform better in the following places:

Speed

The client-server infrastructure currently uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as the default request-response protocol. The HTTP protocol merely directs you to a certain place, which is typically a single server. However, the IPFS P2P approach enables you to simultaneously retrieve various pieces of content from numerous nodes (or computer systems). This results in significant bandwidth budget savings and ensures speedier communication.

Decentralization

As of right now, organizations like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud virtually own any information we freely choose to keep on their web servers. They have the power to arbitrarily exclude you from their platforms and limit your access to your own content.

They could even lock you out under government coercion, which is frequently the case in nations like Iran and China. In contrast, the IPFS network's P2P approach guarantees total decentralization, which in turn guarantees that information is accessible independent of any censoring attempts.

security

IFPS deploys two measures to ensure that malicious actors cannot tamper with any data or file on its network.

- Immutability to ensure that no data uploaded to network nodes can be altered.

- Each file is given a hash. The hash functions as a fingerprint that is exclusive to that particular file. To ensure that you received the right file, you can compare a hash you search for with the hash code you receive.

Because of the underlying decentralized mechanism, hackers lack a target to target.

Efficiency

The IPFS protocol's emphasis on decentralization ensures the advantages we've previously seen in earlier-generation P2P networks like BitTorrent. A file is stored on each node in the network individually. They then send these data upon a request for the corresponding hash, which is a unique locator code for that particular file. The process is similar to the “seeding” of a torrent file.

Note that when a file is first uploaded on IPFS, the network makes only one copy of it, along with one hash. This guarantees that the amount of data that requires processing is comparatively far less. That, in turn, leads to less-intensive storage needs. In addition, this superior efficiency means that IPFS can do with (relatively) low-quality internet connectivity, thus making its network widely accessible.

"What is IPFS? Why Do People Use IPFS?" I hope this article can provide you with a better understanding of IPFS.
