What Is L2 Crypto? In short, Layer 2 solutions are designed to increase the speed and efficiency of blockchains. Why are scaling solutions necessary? Well, let's explore more in this article.

What Is L2 In Crypto?

A secondary framework or protocol that is added on top of an existing blockchain system is referred to as layer 2. The main goal of these protocols is to solve the transaction speed and scaling difficulties that are being faced by the major cryptocurrency networks.

Why Are Scaling Solutions Necessary?

The network has been limited by high gas fees during times of network congestion as a direct result of its inability to scale while depending only on an L1, even though layer 1s like Ethereum offers a highly decentralized infrastructure for developing secure and censorship resistance.

High gas fees are an expensive barrier for users trying to use dapps for transactions. Additionally, they undermine blockchains' ability to be a mechanism for generating cheaper and faster payments. If users must spend more than $200 to complete a single transaction on Ethereum, they are no better off than those who leave centralized payment providers like Paypal due to their 3% fees.

Layer 2 solutions like Polygon, Arbitrum, Loopring, and Optimism currently exist on Ethereum to mitigate some of these scalability challenges. By transferring their ETH to alternative networks, users can transact on many of the same Dapps that are accessible on the Ethereum mainnet gas fees.

What are the Differences Between Layer 2 and Layer 1?

Layer 2 is a scaling solution that sits on top of layer 1 like Bitcoin or Ethereum. By creating separate networks or channels where transactions can be carried out between a constrained number of nodes or participants, L2s speed up and lower the cost of transacting on an L1 and shorten the time it takes to reach consensus.

L2 networks rely on the underlying L1 for security, meaning that all transactions that occur on the L2 network must eventually settle on the larger, more decentralized L1.
