What is Parachain Auction?
Parachain auctions are auctions held on the Polkadot (or Kusama - the network as the fast-moving "canary in the coal mine" of its cousin Polkadot) relay chain to determine which blockchain will connect to the parachain slot . Once the auction starts, any item on the network can submit bids to the relay chain.
Parachains are sold in permissionless candle auctions, a method used to auction ships in the 16th century, where the winner is the highest bidder when the flame goes out, terminating after a random time determined by the system. Polkadot’s and Kusama’s auctions function similarly, with teams bidding using two pieces of information, their bid amount and the slot duration. Project teams use DOT (or KSM for Kusama) to bid.
How many Polkadot Parachain auctions are there?
Based on theoretical computational constraints, the current goal and expectation is that there will be approximately 100 parachain slots available on Polkadot, although potential future optimizations (such as nested relay chains) could further increase this number. However, it will be a while before Polkadot fully supports 100 parachain slots, and they are likely to be slowly added to the system over time. Not all of these slots will be allocated through the parachain slot auction, as some slots will be used for nonprofit parachains and parathreads that support governance.
