If you are wondering about what is Russia’s largest bank, this article is for you. Today we will talk about Russia's largest bank by assets and whether crypto is big in Russia or not. Let’s find out by reading the article below.

What is Russia's largest bank by assets?

As of November 2021, Sberbank is Russia's largest bank by asset value, with assets of nearly 39 trillion Russian rubles. VTB Bank came in second, with roughly twice the asset value of the leader.

Sberbank in a nutshell

Founded in 1841, Sberbank is one of the largest financial institutions in the country. In 2020, it reported annual net lending of more than 25 trillion Russian rubles and served nearly 70% of the country's population. With a brand value of approximately $9.4 billion, Sberbank was named the most valuable Russian brand and topped the list of best employers in Russia 2020. High consumer engagement remains one of the agency's main goals, so in 2020 Sberbank's customer satisfaction index is 9 out of 10.

Is crypto big in Russia?

Cryptocurrencies make up more of Russia's financial system than most other countries due to mistrust of its banking system, said Marlon Pinto, director of research at London-based risk consultancy AnotherDay. A report by the Russian government estimated that there are more than 12 million cryptocurrency wallets storing digital assets, opened by Russian citizens, and the amount of funds is about 2 trillion rubles, or about 23.9 billion U.S. dollars.

According to August 2021 data from the University of Cambridge, Russia is the third-largest country for bitcoin mining, the energy-intensive and mathematically complex process by which new bitcoins are harvested. The Russian government’s attitude toward cryptocurrencies has been hot and cold. The country’s central bank proposed a ban on cryptocurrency businesses last month, calling for a ban on the issuance and operation of cryptocurrencies, preventing banks from investing in them and preventing the exchange of cryptocurrencies into government-backed currencies. The central bank also called for a ban on cryptocurrency mining.
