This article is about what is Starkware layer-2 network. StarkWare, a trailblazer in the realm of zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) and scalability, presents StarkNet, a groundbreaking Layer-2 network designed to elevate the capabilities of Ethereum's ecosystem.

What is Starkware Layer-2 Network?

Starkware Layer-2 Network, also known as StarkNet, is a scalable and secure network for decentralized applications (dapps) on Ethereum. It leverages zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), a cryptographic technique that allows to prove the validity of computations without revealing their details, to achieve high throughput, low latency and low fees.

StarkNet operates as a Layer 2 solution, meaning that it performs most of the computation and storage off-chain, while periodically submitting proofs of correctness to the Ethereum main chain. This way, it reduces the congestion and cost of using the Ethereum network, while preserving its security and decentralization.

StarkNet is powered by Cairo, a Turing-complete programming language for ZKPs. Cairo allows developers to write any business logic in a concise and expressive way, and generate proofs that can be verified efficiently on-chain. Cairo also supports account abstraction, which means that users can interact with StarkNet contracts using any wallet or signature scheme they prefer.

StarkNet is designed to be composable and interoperable, both within its own network and with other Layer 1 and Layer 2 solutions. StarkNet contracts can communicate with each other seamlessly, enabling complex and innovative applications. Moreover, StarkNet provides bridges to transfer assets and data between Ethereum and other networks, such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Polygon.

StarkNet is currently live on Ethereum mainnet in alpha stage, meaning that it is open for developers to deploy and test their dapps, but it is not yet fully decentralized or permissionless. The roadmap for StarkNet includes four phases: Foundations, Planets, Constellations and Universe. Each phase introduces new features and capabilities to the network, such as general computation, multi-app rollups, native token, governance and decentralization.

StarkNet is developed by StarkWare, a leading company in the field of ZKPs and scalability. StarkWare has been operating on Ethereum mainnet since June 2020. powering several projects such as dYdX, Sorare, Immutable X and ApeX. StarkWare also offers StarkEx, a scalability engine for centralized and decentralized exchanges, and Volition, a data availability solution that gives users control over their data.

How Does StarkWare Open Source its Core Technology?

StarkWare, a prominent provider of layer-2 scaling solutions for Ethereum, has unveiled plans to make its core technology, the StarkEx engine, open source in the upcoming months. The StarkEx engine, a robust software framework, empowers developers to construct secure, scalable, and decentralized applications atop Ethereum through the application of zero-knowledge proofs.

Several motivations drive StarkWare's choice to open source its technology:

Encouraging innovation and collaboration within the layer-2 ecosystem, permitting other ventures to leverage and contribute to StarkWare's pioneering research and development.

Elevating security and transparency by enabling comprehensive audits and verification of StarkWare's code and protocols.

Hastening adoption and interconnectivity by simplifying the integration of StarkWare's solutions, making its advantages accessible to developers and users alike.

The initial phase of StarkWare's open source initiative will involve the release of core libraries, encompassing the StarkEx engine, Cairo language, and Pedersen hash function. These libraries will be accessible under the MIT license, facilitating free use, modification, and distribution. Additionally, StarkWare intends to furnish comprehensive documentation, tutorials, and developer support for those seeking to employ its technology.

This initiative will not impact StarkWare's existing products and services, including the StarkNet network, DeversiFi exchange, and Immutable X NFT platform. These offerings will remain operational, with StarkWare's technology as the underlying framework. Furthermore, StarkWare will persist in providing professional services and consultation to projects keen on tapping into its expertise.

Completion of StarkWare's open source initiative is projected by the close of 2023. In the interim, StarkWare welcomes interested parties to monitor its progress through various channels, including its website, blog, Twitter, GitHub, Discord, and Telegram.

Bottom Line

In this article, we have discussed what is Stakware layer-2 network. StarkNet aims to be the ultimate platform for building scalable and secure dapps on Ethereum, leveraging the power and potential of ZKPs.
