What Is STO? STO (security token offering) is an acronym for a contract to invest in a security token offering, which is a contract to buy securities like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and real estate investment trusts. Let's explore more in this article.

What Is STO?

Security Token Offering, or STO, is a term of increasing importance in the financial industry. The STO process is how investors issue digital currency or tokens. These securities or financial instruments are designed for trading on STO crypto exchange where the data is stored on a public blockchain. They have a monetary value.

How are Security Tokens Different From Cryptocurrencies?

Cryptocurrencies and security tokens are very similar. They are produced by a blockchain and kept there. Both of them are tokens, but the key distinction is in their function, intended usage, and actual use. A cryptocurrency is made to be used as money, currency, or a form of payment. An investment asset such as a stock, bond, certificate, or security token is meant to be utilized in the same way.

There have been many cryptocurrencies released that weren't meant to be utilized as investment instruments. Traders and investors discovered, for instance, that when Bitcoin was listed on cryptocurrency exchanges, they could profit significantly from it. Investors treat Bitcoin as security to a result, despite the fact that this is not how it was intended to work.

Ether, the native coin of Ethereum, was created to be used for internal Ethereum network transaction fees. In that respect, ether is a cryptocurrency. However, because it is being traded on exchanges and held for its increasing value, investors treat it as a security token.

However, because BTC and ETH are not designed to be used as security tokens, and there is no expectation of profits from the developers, they do not currently meet the criteria to be considered securities by the SEC.
