Tsai was born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1964. He moved to the US at the age of 13 to attend a boarding school in New Jersey, where he learned to play lacrosse. He graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in economics and East Asian studies, and a law degree. He worked as a tax lawyer, a private equity investor, and a buyout specialist before joining Alibaba in 1999.

He met Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, through a mutual friend in Taiwan. He quit his $700.000-a-year job to join Alibaba for $50 a month, becoming one of the first members of the company. He helped raise funds for Alibaba, including selling a 40% stake to Yahoo for $1 billion in 2005. He also oversaw Alibaba's expansion into new businesses, such as cloud computing, digital media, and entertainment.

Tsai holds a 1.4% stake in Alibaba Group, which had revenue of $133 billion and 1.13 billion active customers in the year ending March 2022. Alibaba operates several online platforms, such as Taobao, Tmall, AliExpress, and Alipay. It also owns stakes in other companies, such as Ant Group, Lazada, Ele.me, and Youku.

In 2018. Tsai bought a 49% stake in the Brooklyn Nets from Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov for $1.13 billion. The deal valued the team at $2.3 billion, making it one of the most expensive sports franchises in the world. In 2019. he bought the remaining 51% stake and the Barclays Center arena for $2.35 billion. The Nets are currently worth $3.4 billion, according to Sportico.

Tsai is a Canadian citizen and lives in Hong Kong with his wife Clara Wu and their three children. He is an avid lacrosse fan and owns two professional lacrosse teams: the San Diego Seals and the New York Riptide. He also supports various philanthropic causes, such as education, health care, social justice, and environmental protection.
