This article is about what is the current net worth of Peter Thiel. Peter Thiel is one of the most influential and controversial figures in the tech world. He is a co-founder of PayPal, Palantir, and Founders Fund, as well as an early investor in Facebook, SpaceX, and Stripe.

What is the Current Net Worth of Peter Thiel?

He is also known for his political views, his support for Donald Trump, and his involvement in the lawsuit that brought down Gawker Media.

But how much is Peter Thiel worth today? According to Forbes, as of September 2023. Thiel had a net worth of $5.8 billion, ranking him 468th in the world.  However, according to Bloomberg, as of June 2023. Thiel had a net worth of $9.7 billion, ranking him 213th in the world.  Why the discrepancy? And how did Thiel accumulate his fortune?

The main source of Thiel's wealth is his stake in Palantir Technologies, a big data analysis company that he co-founded in 2003 and serves as its chairman. Palantir went public via a direct listing in 2020 and has seen its share price soar since then, reaching a market capitalization of over $50 billion as of September 2023.  Thiel owns about 10% of Palantir's shares, which are worth about $5 billion.

Another major source of Thiel's wealth is his stake in Facebook, which he acquired in 2004 when he invested $500.000 for a 10.2% stake in the social network.  Thiel has sold most of his shares in Facebook over the years, but still remains on the board of directors.  As of September 2023. Thiel owned about 5 million shares of Facebook, which are worth about $1.8 billion.

Thiel also has stakes in other tech companies, such as SpaceX and Stripe, through his venture capital firm Founders Fund, which he co-founded in 2005 with other PayPal alumni. Founders Fund has invested in some of the most valuable unicorns in the world, such as Airbnb, Lyft, Spotify, and Coinbase.  Thiel's share of Founders Fund's portfolio is estimated to be worth about $2 billion.

Thiel also has other sources of income and assets, such as his hedge fund Clarium Capital, his investment firms Thiel Capital and Mithril Capital, his citizenship and property in New Zealand, and his philanthropic activities through the Thiel Foundation.    However, these are not publicly disclosed or easily valued.

Therefore, based on the available information, we can estimate that Peter Thiel's current net worth is somewhere between $5.8 billion and $9.7 billion, depending on the source and the valuation method. This makes him one of the richest and most powerful people in the tech industry and beyond.

What Does he Think of Bitcoin?

Peter Thiel, a staunch Bitcoin advocate, views it as a groundbreaking innovation with similarities to gold, offering value storage and inflation hedging. He believes Bitcoin's widespread adoption sets it apart from other cryptocurrencies and sees it as a means to challenge fiat currencies and central banks. Thiel envisions Bitcoin driving social and political change by empowering individuals and fostering financial autonomy.

Yet, Thiel acknowledges Bitcoin's volatility, security concerns, and regulatory risks. He questions its scalability, sustainability, and environmental impact. He also critiques some Bitcoin enthusiasts' rigidity and over-optimism.

Despite reservations, Thiel is optimistic about Bitcoin's future. He envisions a more accessible and user-friendly Bitcoin, urging innovation, collaboration, and preparedness within the community to navigate upcoming challenges.

Bottom Line

In this article, we have discussed what is the current net worth of Peter Thiel. Peter Thiel's wealth is substantial and diversified, spanning investments, tech companies, and financial ventures.
