This article is about what is the digital currency of China. China is one of the first countries to launch its own digital currency, the Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP) or e-CNY. Developed and administered by the People's Bank of China (PBOC), this digital incarnation of the yuan represents a strategic leap into the future of finance.

What is the Digital Currency of China?

China's Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP), often referred to as e-CNY, marks a pioneering venture into the realm of national digital currencies. It is a digital version of the yuan, the national currency of China, and is issued and controlled by the People's Bank of China (PBOC). The DCEP aims to provide a convenient, secure, and efficient alternative to cash payments, and to reduce the costs and risks of money laundering, counterfeiting, and fraud. It also enables the PBOC to monitor and regulate the flow of money in the economy, and to implement monetary policies more effectively.

The DCEP is designed to be compatible with existing payment systems, such as Alipay and WeChat Pay, which are widely used in China. Users can download a digital wallet app on their smartphones, and use it to store, transfer, and spend the DCEP. Users can also exchange the DCEP for cash at designated outlets or banks.

The DCEP is currently in the trial phase, and has been tested in several cities and regions in China, such as Shenzhen, Suzhou, Chengdu, and Beijing. The PBOC has also distributed millions of yuan worth of DCEP to citizens through lotteries, as a way to encourage adoption and feedback. The PBOC has not announced a specific timeline for the nationwide rollout of the DCEP, but some experts expect it to be ready by the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The DCEP has significant implications for China's economy and society, as well as for the global financial system. The DCEP could enhance financial inclusion, innovation, and efficiency in China, as well as support the internationalization of the yuan and challenge the dominance of the US dollar.

What is its First Use in Circulation?

The digital yuan has been actively undergoing real-world testing across several key Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu, and Xiong'an. Notably, the People's Bank of China (PBoC) has forged partnerships with major tech players and online platforms like Alibaba, Tencent, Meituan, Huawei, and Baidu to integrate digital yuan usage into their applications and devices. Recent reports from The Block indicate that as of September 2021. approximately 140 million individuals have engaged with China's digital yuan application.

In a significant milestone, the digital yuan made its debut in circulation back in October 2020 when Shenzhen distributed 10 million yuan (equivalent to $1.5 million) in digital currency to 50.000 residents through a lottery mechanism. These fortunate recipients were then able to download a digital wallet app and utilize the funds at a network of over 3.000 designated merchants within the city. Since this inaugural event, numerous other cities have followed suit, orchestrating similar initiatives to both trial the digital yuan and promote its adoption.

Although the People's Bank of China has not officially disclosed a specific launch date for the digital yuan, it is widely anticipated to be the world's first major central bank digital currency to see widespread implementation. Furthermore, the PBoC has expressed intentions to showcase the digital yuan's capabilities and leadership by employing it at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. This move has the potential to disrupt the dominance of established payment systems like Alipay and WeChat Pay, which are presently controlled by private entities and collectively hold over 90% of China's mobile payments market.

Bottom Line

In this article, we have discussed what is the digital currency of China. However, the DCEP also raises some challenges and concerns, such as privacy, security, and regulation issues, as well as potential impacts on monetary sovereignty and stability.
