The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) takes inspiration from a technological challenge first contended when the US military was developing the building blocks of the internet. But, what is the Ethereum Name Service? How does ENS work? Let's see.

What is the Ethereum Name Service?

The Ethereum Name Service is a distributed, open and expandable naming system that interacts with the Ethereum blockchain.

The ENS's function is to turn human-readable names, such as "john .eth," into machine-readable names, like wallet addresses like "8g978dl39ji9xl."

Users can purchase and control their own domains through the ENS, enabling secure and decentralized transactions without having to deal with lengthy and complicated addresses. Additionally, it lessens the possibility of any input errors when entering the recipient's address for money transfers.

How Does ENS Work?

The Ethereum platform is used to further create the smart contracts that form the basis of ENS. The ENS is created through the use of two smart contracts. The first smart contract is actually an ENS registry which contains that data about all the names of domains that have been registered under ENS. The first smart contract holds three important pieces of information.

- First is the details of the domain like the owner of the domain.

- The second is the resolver for the domain.

- The third is caching time for all the records under the specific domain.

The second contract that is a part of ENS is Resolver.

- The resolver is the smart contract that converts the machine-readable address to human-readable and vice versa.

- It matches the domain name to an individual, website, or address.

In the upcoming years, the number of available domains will increase and eventually reach a new level. Similar to this, in recent years, the popularity of subdomains of names like.eth has also grown.

Visit an ENS app and search for the domain name. Consider finding a domain for a website. A domain will display as available or otherwise taken if it is not registered with anyone. In ENS apps, the case is similar. To get an ENS for yourself:

- Find the domain name by going to an ENS app.

- If your preferred domain or username is available, you must go through the registration process.

- For the registration, you must conduct at least two transactions from your wallet, and you must also pay a yearly fee.

At the moment, every domain name with more than five characters will cost $5. You will have the domain name that will be connected to the websites, crypto wallets, subdomains, etc. after the fees and transactions are done. Users seek out their individual addresses as ENS gains popularity quickly. Domains like Exchange .eth were sold for 6,660 ETH in an auction which converts to $609,000. The platform offers a wide range of domain names, including those with other extensions like .com, .org, and .io in addition to .eth.

What Is The Ethereum Name Service? How Does ENS Work? - Hopefully, this article can help you to understand it better.
