In this article, you will learn what is the meaning of ASIC.  In crypto mining, the energy consumption and usage of computer processing power is so huge that general integrated circuits are not sufficient. So, customized chips are created for particular use like crypto mining. ASICs are computer equipment which are specialized for a specific use, rather than general use.

What is the Meaning of ASIC?

ASIC means application-specific integrated circuit. ASIC is a chip created for a particular use or application, rather than for general-purpose use. They are usually made using silicon technology. Because of their uniqueness, they come in many flavors and types.

ASIC can be manufactured in multiple ways. They can be created from scratch to fit a very specific need or application, by creating a single IC with all the components needed (the resulting IC is called an SoC or System-on-Chip). ASIC are typically coded using a hardware description language like Verilog or VHDL.

Before we can dive deeper into ASIC technology and find out the benefits and possible drawbacks, we have to look at the history and understand where it all started from.

What is an ASIC Miner?

An ASIC miner is a computerized device that uses ASICs for the sole purpose of "mining" digital currency. Generally, each ASIC miner is constructed to mine a specific digital currency. So, a Bitcoin ASIC miner can mine only bitcoin. One way to think about bitcoin ASICs is as specialized bitcoin mining computers optimized to solve the mining algorithm.

Developing and manufacturing ASICs as mining devices is costly and complex. However, because ASICs are built especially for mining cryptocurrency, they do the job faster than less powerful computers. As a result, ASIC chips for cryptocurrency mining have become increasing at 5 terahashes per second but only using 34.5 joules per terahash.

What are the Advantages of ASIC Miner?

Though GPU and CPU mining rigs rely on components that have more than one function, ASIC miners are designed for the sole purpose of mining cryptocurrency. This singular focus makes an ASIC miner much more powerful and energy-efficient than a comparable GPU miner.

Because each cryptocurrency has its own cryptographic hash algorithm, an ASIC miner is designed to mine using that specific algorithm. For example, Bitcoin ASIC miners are designed to hash the SHA-256 algorithm, while that Litecoin (LTC) uses scrypt. An ASIC miner could technically mine any other cryptocurrency based on the same algorithm, most miners who invest in ASIC hardware designed to mine bitcoin or Litecoin stick to mining that specific cryptocurrency.

What are the Uses of ASICs?

For a low-volume production series or prototypes, ASICs are not economically viable, as the engineering costs are extremely high. Therefore, ASICs are recommended for high-volume production series, where the costs can be dampened across many devices.

Another application that is well-suited for ASICs is making an existing device smaller and/or more energy efficient and/or more performant. This is the reason why devices are constantly getting smaller, as ASICs penetrate the market further and further and drive the miniaturization of all devices, from the chips that provide the functionality of your car and phone, to the chips that power your fridge or automated coffee maker.

Bottom Line

Now, ASICs are widely used in crypto mining due to their great advantage of high specificity. So, if you are interested in ASICs, this is about what is the meaning of ASIC.
