This article is about when was the last SBF trial. Sam Bankman-Fried is a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency industry and the founder of FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange known for its derivatives trading platform.

When was the Last SBF Trial?

The last SBF trial was held on November 30. 2023. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The trial was a civil lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder and CEO of FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange platform. The SEC accused Bankman-Fried of violating federal securities laws by offering unregistered securities in the form of leveraged tokens and futures contracts on FTX.

The trial lasted for three days and involved testimonies from both sides, as well as expert witnesses and documentary evidence. The SEC argued that Bankman-Fried knowingly misled investors and exposed them to excessive risks by offering complex and volatile products without proper disclosures or safeguards. The SEC also claimed that Bankman-Fried failed to comply with anti-money laundering and know-your-customer regulations, and that he manipulated the prices of certain tokens and contracts on FTX.

Bankman-Fried denied all the allegations and defended his actions as innovative and beneficial for the crypto industry. He argued that FTX was not subject to U.S. jurisdiction because it was based in Hong Kong and did not serve U.S. customers. He also contended that the products offered by FTX were not securities, but rather commodities or derivatives that were exempt from registration requirements. He further asserted that FTX had adequate risk management and compliance systems in place, and that he did not engage in any market manipulation or fraud.

The jury deliberated for two hours and returned a verdict in favor of Bankman-Fried. The jury found that the SEC failed to prove that FTX offered securities or that Bankman-Fried violated any securities laws. The jury also awarded Bankman-Fried $10 million in damages for reputational harm caused by the SEC's lawsuit.

The verdict was a major victory for Bankman-Fried and the crypto industry, as it set a precedent for future cases involving crypto-related products and platforms. The verdict also boosted the confidence and credibility of FTX, which saw its trading volume and valuation increase significantly after the trial.

When is the Next One?

The next SBF trial is scheduled for January 15. 2024. in the High Court of Hong Kong. The trial is a criminal case filed by the Hong Kong Department of Justice (DOJ) against Bankman-Fried, who is facing charges of money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud. The DOJ alleges that Bankman-Fried used FTX as a front to launder billions of dollars of illicit funds from various sources, including drug trafficking, terrorism, and sanctions evasion. The DOJ also accuses Bankman-Fried of evading taxes by underreporting his income and assets, and of defrauding investors and regulators by falsifying FTX's financial statements and records.

The trial is likely to have more serious consequences for Bankman-Fried, who faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The trial is also likely to have more significant implications for FTX and the crypto industry, as it could affect FTX's operations, reputation, and market share, as well as the regulatory environment and public perception of crypto-related activities.

Bottom Line

In this article, we have discussed when was the last SBF trial. The trial is expected to be more challenging and complex than the previous one, as it involves multiple jurisdictions, authorities, and evidence.
