How Strong is the Indian Rupee?

According to a Reuters poll of foreign exchange (FX) strategists, the Indian rupee, which performed poorly among Asian currencies last year, is expected to further decline in the coming months and is projected to remain around its current level in 12 months. Af ter experiencing a decline of over 10% in 2022, the rupee has traded within a range of 80.88 to 82.95 per us dollar this year, houseing just about 82.10 on tuesday. The Poll's Medi An Forecasts Indicate that by the End of This Month, The Rupee is Expected to trade at around 82.40 per dollar and around 82.55 per dollar by the end of June. Over a 12-month period, it is forecasted to slightly recover to around 81.50 per dollar. However, a significant portion of the respondents, one-fifth, predict that the currency could reach 82.90 per dollar or weaker as early as the following month. In response to an additional question, the majority of poll respondents, 13 out of 16, expressed that the risks to their forecast were skewed towards the rupee being even weaker in the next month. While the US Federal Reserve's indication of nearing the end of an Aggressive tightening cycle provided some temporary relief to most currencies last month, the poll anticipates that the Indian rupee will face renewed pressure.
