Ray Chan, the co-founder and CEO of the Hong Kong entertainment platform 9GAG, recently acquired Stephen Chow's "Nobody" non-fungible token (NFT) for 19.527 Ethereum, equivalent to $47,300. This purchase represents a remarkable 3,155% premium over the series' current floor price of 0.6 Ethereum, valued at $1,450. Notably, Chow's "Nobody" NFT, themed around the character "Sun Wukong," features a unique sun signature that constitutes less than 0.01% of the collection, making it a highly sought-after piece. Chan expressed his admiration for the acquisition through a poetic tribute, praising Chow's significance as an actor and the unparalleled value of the artwork.
On February 7 that Stephen Chow, renowned for his iconic film "Kung Fu," recently launched the Nobody NFT series, garnering a total transaction volume exceeding 10,516 Ethereum since its inception earlier in the month. The NFTs, conceived in collaboration with Chinese-American rapper Ouyang Jin (MC Jin), were introduced on the Moonbox platform, developed by the Hong Kong-based startup of the same name. Notably, Chow also partnered with the cryptocurrency exchange OKX to distribute 2,500 Nobody NFTs out of a total collection of 10,000, attracting over 125,000 applicants in a promotional campaign held on January 10.
In addition to its traditional endeavors centered around memes and internet trends, 9GAG has been actively embracing emerging Web3 technologies. Ray Chan, concurrently serving as the CEO of Memeland, a Web3 venture studio established by 9GAG, has emerged as a keen collector of NFTs. Reflecting on his experiences during the bullish NFT market, Chan acknowledged the valuable lessons learned and emphasized their influence on shaping the approach of his Web3 project. As part of its ongoing initiatives, 9GAG is currently seeking a blockchain engineer to spearhead the development of resilient, efficient, and secure smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain.
The acquisition of Stephen Chow's "Nobody" NFT by Ray Chan underscores the growing interest and involvement of established entertainment figures in the burgeoning NFT space. Beyond the artistic and cultural significance, such acquisitions highlight the evolving landscape of digital ownership and the increasing integration of blockchain technology into the entertainment industry. With 9GAG's active participation in Web3 technologies and Chan's personal engagement in NFT collecting, the company remains at the forefront of innovation, poised to explore new opportunities in the evolving digital ecosystem.
