Bitwise, a cryptocurrency asset manager, has expressed interest in launching an exchange-traded product (ETP) focusing on the Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network and its application ecosystem, according to Matt Hougan, the company's chief investment officer. In a Forbes interview published on March 31, Hougan acknowledged both excitement and a sense of missed opportunity, highlighting the potential of such a product in the market.
While Hougan expressed confidence in the Ethereum ecosystem's ongoing development, he noted uncertainty regarding the prominence of Layer 2 solutions and decentralized applications (DApps) in the future. He emphasized the need for comprehensive coverage to anticipate the evolving landscape of decentralized finance, envisioning a diverse array of popular DApps and economic dynamics in the years ahead.
Regarding the recent London Hard Fork upgrade to the Ethereum network, Hougan underscored its significance, believing that the market has yet to fully appreciate its transformative potential. However, he voiced concerns about market readiness for spot ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs), suggesting that the timing of their approval should be strategic to ensure broader market acceptance, especially among traditional financial advisors.
Bitwise has filed regulatory forms with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to list a spot ether ETF, joining several other prominent financial firms seeking SEC approval for similar products. However, Hougan hopes for a delayed approval timeline, possibly until December, to allow for better market preparedness and understanding among financial advisors.
Despite some analysts' skepticism regarding the approval prospects for spot Ethereum ETFs, others remain optimistic, pointing to improvements in addressing regulatory concerns based on the successful precedent set by spot Bitcoin ETFs. Bitwise, a key player in the spot Bitcoin ETF market, has witnessed significant capital inflows, reflecting growing investor interest in cryptocurrency investment vehicles.
