On March 4, a rare non-fungible token (NFT) of an alien character within the CryptoPunks collection achieved the second-highest sale ever recorded for the platform. The NFT, identified as CryptoPunk #3100, was acquired by an anonymous bidder for 4,500 Ethereum, equivalent to approximately $16,032,959 at the time of purchase. This significant transaction occurred around 2:30 PM UTC after several days of intense bidding, with the final bid surpassing the previous offer of 4,250 ETH.
Among the 10,000 unique CryptoPunks in existence, CryptoPunk #3100 stands out as one of only 406 to feature a headband, further adding to its rarity. However, its exceptional value can be primarily attributed to its classification as one of just nine Alien CryptoPunks. Notably, the highest recorded sale for a CryptoPunk took place on February 12, 2022, when CryptoPunk #5822, known as the hooded alien, fetched a staggering 8,000 ETH, valued at $23.7 million at the time.
Although headbands are marginally less prevalent than bandanas within the CryptoPunks collection, with 481 characters sporting headbands compared to 406 with bandanas, the latter holds greater significance due to its association with the rare alien category. While the alien character adorned with earrings and a cowboy hat technically holds the distinction of being the rarest individual CryptoPunk NFT, the one featuring a hat, pipe, and sunglasses is deemed the rarest based on a combination of attributes and their respective rarity levels.
Ultimately, market dynamics are shaped by sales outcomes, and it's evident that both the "Alien with the Bandana" and the "Alien with the Headband" consistently command top value within the CryptoPunks ecosystem. These two variants are joined by two other alien-themed creations in the top four highest-selling CryptoPunks, while the remaining spots in the top 10 are occupied by characters with the "ape" attribute. Notably, the most expensive NFT ever auctioned remains Mike “Beeple” Winkelmann’s piece titled Everydays: The First 5000 Days, which fetched a remarkable $69,346,250 on March 11, 2020.
