In a recent blog post by Joseph Mills, the group product manager of Google Play Store, it was announced that the store now allows video game publishers to sell non-fungible token (NFT) games. This update marks a significant shift in Google Play's policies , opening up new opportunities for blockchain-based digital content trading within apps and games. The post highlighted the inclusion of Unique NFT rewards as a means to enhance user loyalty.
Google Play had previously banned cryptocurrency mining apps in 2018 and removed the Bitcoin Blast video game in 2020 due to deceptive practices. Similarly, Apple's App Store stated in October that NFTs purchased outside of the store cannot offer special benefits to user s within games, and failure to comply would result in a ban. Apple also requires a 30% fee for NFTs sold through its App Store version of a game.
These actions and statements have led to speculation about mobile NFT games facing challenges. However, Google Play's new policy demonstrates its openness to these games on Android devices, provided they adhere to specific rules. Developers must transparently inform users whether the game allows s them to earn or purchase NFTs or cryptocurrencies. Glorifying potential income from the game or trading activities is prohibited, and developers are not allowed to sell loot boxes or enable gambling mechanics.
As long as these guidelines are followed, games can incorporate tokenized assets as part of the gaming experience, including reimagining traditional games with user-owned content. Google Play collaborated with leaders in Web3 gaming to develop these rules and emphasizes its commitment to understand developers' challenges and opportunities.
While Web3 games are prohibited on Steam, the largest PC game publisher, Epic Games, made a different move by launching the NFT card game Gods Unchained on its store on June 22. The dynamic landscape of NFT games is evolving, with platforms like Google Play and Epic Games embracing this emerging trend, while each establishes its own set of guidelines to ensure responsible and enjoyable gaming experiences for users.
