HSBC, a major global banking firm, has revealed plans to introduce an institutional custody platform for tokenized securities, also known as security tokens. The announcement on November 8 outlined HSBC's partnership with Metaco, a technology company owned by Ripple, to integrate its institutional platform Harmonize with HSBC's upcoming digital asset custody service.
The bank anticipates launching the new digital asset custody services in 2024, complementing its existing digital asset issuance platform, HSBC Orion, and its tokenized physical gold product introduced on November 1, 2023. These services collectively constitute a comprehensive digital asset offering designed for HSBC's institutional clients, demonstrating the bank's commitment to the broader development of the digital asset market.
John O’Neill, the Global Head of Digital Asset Strategy at HSBC, emphasized the significance of these services in underlining the bank's dedication to the digital asset market's growth. Li Zhuguang, Head of Digital, Data, and Innovation at HSBC, indicated that the introduction of digital asset custody aligns with the increasing demand from asset managers and asset owners for such services. Li noted the dynamic nature of the market, describing the current period as an "important moment of innovation" for asset servicers.
An HSBC spokesperson clarified that the upcoming digital asset custody platform for institutional investors will exclusively cover security tokens and will not include cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or stablecoins such as Tether. Unlike traditional cryptocurrencies, tokenized securities represent digital versions of securities issued and transferred on blockchain networks.
This move by HSBC into tokenized securities is not the first instance of the company venturing into the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry. On November 1, HSBC announced the successful testing of tokenized deposits in collaboration with Ant Group, a prominent Chinese financial services provider, further showcasing the bank's active engagement with blockchain technologies.
