Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has highlighted the centralization of nodes as one of Ethereum's primary challenges. He believes that addressing this issue is crucial for maintaining the network's decentralization in the long run. Currently, a significant portion of Ethereum nodes, which number 5,901, are operated through centralized network providers like Amazon Web Services. Buterin emphasized the need to make running nodes more affordable and straightforward to counter this centralization.
He identified six key issues that need to be tackled to combat centralization, with the node problem being a pivotal aspect. Currently, running an Ethereum node necessitates substantial data storage, making it challenging for individuals to participate without relying on centralized services. Buterin noted that statelessness is a crucial technology for simplifying node operation, reducing the overhead required to run a node to nearly zero. Stateless clients would help in eliminating dependence on centralized service providers for verifying network activities.
Ethereum's RoadMap Incorporates Statelessness As A Fundamental Element, with Developments Like "The Verge" and "The Purge" TAKING STEPS in that Direction. The Ultimate Goal is to Enable Fully Verify Ethereum Nodes that Can Run on Relatively Modest and Affordable Hardware. However, Buterin acknowledged that addressing these technical challenges might take several years, possibly a decade or more.
Beyond statelessness, Buterin identified other essential measures to reduce centralization on the Ethereum network. These include simplifying documentation, lowering barriers to distributed staking, enhancing staking's security and accessibility, and making staking ether more convenient. Nevertheless, Buterin concluded that Ethereum's most immediate and critical The concern is achieving higher levels of scalability. Currently, the Ethereum community is primarily adopting the use of zero-knowledge (ZK) rollups, a key tool for enhancing scalability by moving computation and state storage off-chain to increase the Ethereum main chain's throughput.
